Ten years ago, colleagues and I launched the Retaliatory Violence Insight Project (RVIP) as part of the US Department of Justice's goal of discovering how conflict analysis and resolution could shed light on the painful and persistent problem of retaliatory community violence.
We worked closely with Memphis, TN and Lowell, MA on an issue that continues to impact the country: individuals seeking justice on their own terms.
While the problem of retaliatory violence is deep and complex, RVIP highlighted an approach, rooted in curiosity and conflict communication, that helped law enforcement build trust in the justice system one interaction at a time .
This article revisits the project’s impact and the mutual accountability that still guides Insight Policing today.
