4 Key Takeaways to keep your Insight Policing skills fresh

Here are 4 Key Takeaways to help you keep your Insight Policing skills fresh so that you can confidently turn conflict into cooperation. (Print out the cheat sheet is linked below!)

#1 Remember That There's a Pattern to How We Think.  Every Action is linked to a Decision in response to a Feeling about what we think we Know. For a refresher video on the loop, watch this.

#2 Keep Your Eyes Out for Conflict Behavior. Notice fight, flight, freeze and fawn behaviors as well as high emotions and strong language. They tell you that someone is Defending against some kind of Threat (personal, practical, social).

#3 Hear People Out Even If You Think You Know What They're Going to Say. Listen and Verify by reflecting, repeating, and paraphrasing. This makes sure you have the right information and makes people feel heard and understood, which starts the process of de-escalation.

#4 Ask About It! Once you've noticed and verified, ask a curious question! Use your curious questions list as a guide to get to the why: What's the threat? Why that defense? This gives you information you can use to solve the problem and reactivates critical thinking, putting the other person in a position to cooperate willingly.
